Summer Update

Summer of Speed! After the LA Marathon I decided to change things up a bit and focus this summer of increasing my speed and keeping the weekly mileage down. Racing the shorter distance events has been fun and I’m glad to say I’ve hit some PRs that I’m very happy about! Now that the summer is pretty much over (doesn’t feel like it with this heat!) I’ll be marathon training again soon for CIM in December. Also this month I’ll be running the Berlin Marathon but I won’t be trying for PR as I will do my best to take in all the scenery that the route has to offer.

Below are some of the PRs and Course PRs that I’ve hit this summer

5K: 5/18 – Armed Forces 18:38 (2 Second PR) -> 7/13 – Meals on Wheels 18:23 (15 Second PR)

10K: 6/1 – Wrigley River Run 39: 04 (2:02 PR)

6/2 Griffith Park Trail Marathon Relay 38:36 (4:32 Course PR)

9/2 Conquer the Bridge 34:58 (10 Second Course PR)

Nike Go! Freeway 10k

I really need to do a better job at keeping this thing updated. Nike has an awesome event in which they shit down the 90 Freeway for a few hours and had a fun 10k race. It was my first Nike event and I’ve always heard they were lots of fun so wanted to make sure I did this event.

I did bib pick up at Finish Line at the Del Amo Fashion Center since it would’ve been hard for me to make any of other ones that were further away. Bib pick up was easy and quick but I later found out I was missing the bag drop sticker so I had to get a new bib assigned on race day.

The day before the race I did a Griffith Park Marathon Relay Preview Run so I wasn’t sure how fresh my legs would be come Sunday, Some would ask why I would do hills the day before a race but in reality, this is all for fun and as long as I finish with a smile on my face that’s all that matters.

Starting out the race realized I had gone out wayyyyy too fast at a 6:20 pace. This is way faster than my PR race pace. I knew I wouldn’t be able to hold the pace the whole way so I tried to maintain a 6:40-6:50 pace but in the later miles the faster pace wear really started to show. However I’m very happy to say I finished with a PR of 42:18!

There was no medal for this event, instead we were given a pair of Beats Earphones which was much cooler in my opinion! After the race we were given two free beers and were able to hang out and take in all the event had to offer such as live music, carnival style games, giant jenga and checkers.

All in all it was a great event and I look forward to future Nike events!
